CREST HAVEN — Homeless people living locally should not be hopeless.
The Cape May County Board of Social Services will receive over $200,000 in federal grant funds to provide housing for homeless individuals in this county.
“We’re very happy to have this grant as it will provide additional housing resources for the homeless in our community,” said Freeholder Gerald Thornton, who oversees county Social Services.
This funding was part of 41 Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance grants under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which provided $13.5 million to New Jersey’s homeless population, including transitional housing, permanent housing and a variety of supportive services. The grants were announced Tue., Aug. 10 by New Jersey’s U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez.
“This federal funding will help homeless men and women in New Jersey with the assistance and services they need to gain access to housing,” stated Lautenberg, in a release. “With this funding, we can help provide new opportunities to some of the state’s most hard pressed families and put more New Jerseyans in decent homes.”
“During these tough economic times, with a tight jobs market and high foreclosure rate, it is important for our state’s families and economy that those who are struggling the most can stay afloat,” Menendez added.
Regarding the local award, Thornton said the $206,702 grant would allow the county to provide the following housing opportunities for local homeless individuals:
• Two one-bedroom units for three years
• Two two-bedroom units for three years
• One one-bedroom unit for five years
“We need this because Cape May County has a high rate of unemployment, particularly in the winter months with our seasonal economy,” Thornton said. “High housing costs are also a problem.”
