COURT HOUSE — Cape May County Democrats announced candidates for freeholder and surrogate.
County Democrats met at the Old County Court House here Tue., March 27, and held their convention.
They unanimously endorsed Jeff Sutherland to run for surrogate and Walt Deegan to run for freeholder.
Sutherland lives in Ocean City, and is an attorney with a practice in Linwood. A significant portion of his practice is in the areas handled by the surrogate, including the probate of wills and estate litigation.
“I am excited about this campaign. I will work hard to convince the voters of Cape May County that I am the most qualified candidate to be the next surrogate. But I know that being surrogate is not just about get-ting the law and the process right; it is also about helping people through difficult times and difficult situations,” Southerland stated in a release.
Sutherland has served on the Ocean City Utility Advisory Commission, serves on the Board of Trustees for U.S. Life Saving Station 30, and on the Ocean City Historic Preservation Commission.
Deegan lives in Wildwood Crest. He is the founder and operator of the Scoop Taylor Basketball Tournament, held each year in June in the Wildwoods. The tournament brings from 100 to 130 teams from all over the East Coast to Wildwood for a long weekend. Deegan spent most of his career in the telecommunications industry and stays busy driving a bus for a local nursing home.
“The main issue is jobs. I know how hard it is to find a good job down here. We have to try harder to get good, year around jobs into this county. Whatever anyone has been doing, has not been enough. We still have 17% unemployment,” Deegan stated in a release.
“This is an exciting year. We offer two great candidates who will work hard to gain the votes of each per-son in Cape May County,” County Chairman Jim Pickering stated.
“Jeff Sutherland does estate work, and has the temperament to be an excellent surrogate. Walt Deegan does not just talk about economic development, but through the Tournament he organizes, he actually creates economic opportunities here in Cape May County. I encourage every Democrat to work hard for them,” Pickering added.
Democrats also announced that Cassandra Shober will be their candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives. Shober attended the convention; she asked for and received the enthusiastic support of local Democrats.
