County Commemorates Anniversary of Greek Independence Day

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton along with Freeholders Kristine Gabor and E. Marie Hayes joined members of Cape May County’s Greek Orthodox community on March 23, 2013 at the county Administration Building to celebrate Greek Independence Day. Each year, officials gather in front of the County Administration Building for a Greek Flag Raising Ceremony as a tribute to freedom and liberty.
March 25th is the day observed as Greek Independence Day in recognition of the 192nd anniversary of Greek independence. This event for Greeks celebrates a successful war of Independence waged by Greek Revolutionaries between 1821 and 1830, together with several European powers against an Ottoman Empire. Greece was recognized as an independent nation in May 1832.
The Freeholders paid tribute to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of North Wildwood and the Greek-American community of Cape May County which serve as beacons of the Greek language, culture, values, heritage, civilization and Hellenic ideals.
