COURT HOUSE — In celebration of Law Day, the Cape May County Bar Association held a Law Fair on Friday, May 1 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Cape May County Superior Court, 9 North Main Street.
All members of the public were invited to attend.
Activities includes an award ceremony and reception for the 2009 Cape May County High School Mock Trial Champions, Lower Cape May Regional High School; three free legal presentations; and tables featuring attorneys, Cape May County Agencies and Departments, and Court personnel.
Legal presentations included, “Healthcare Access” presented by South Jersey Legal Services; 10:00 a.m., “Cyber Safety for Senior Citizens” presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office; and 11:00 a.m., “Divorce ‘How To’ for Pro Se Litigants” presented by South Jersey Legal Services.
Table exhibits began at 10:00 a.m. throughout the courthouse include the following participants: Cape May County Bar Association; Cape May County Clerk’s Office; Cape May County Judiciary Civil Division; Cape May County Judiciary Criminal Division; Cape May County Judiciary Family Division; Cape May County Judiciary Human Resources; Cape May County Judiciary Jury Management Office; Cape May County Municipal Division; Cape May County Judiciary Probation Department; Cape May County One Stop Career Center; Cape May County Sheriff’s Department; Cape May County Surrogate’s Office; Cape May County Vicinage Advisory Committee on Minority Concerns; Cape Mediation Services, Inc.; Community Partnership for a Tobacco Free New Jersey; Cooper Levenson; Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children; D’Avanzo, Poserina and McHugh; Divorce Mediation featuring Lisa M. Radell, Esq. and Kathleen M. Vella, Esq.; Law Offices of John J. Zarych; Legal Secretaries of Cape May County, Inc.; Puerto Rican Action Committee; Serber Konschak, LLP; South Jersey Legal Services, Inc.; and Victim Advocacy Center.
One of the popular tables included the County Clerk’s archives. The County Clerk’s Office maintains a collection of public records relating to property and civil matters dating back to the 1690’s. One such archived document was an execution warrant signed by the governor and dated in 1894 for a convicted felon to be hanged outside the court house.
“It is our responsibility to protect these archival treasures of Cape May County.” County Clerk Rita Fulginiti said.
The 2009 Cape May County Law Fair was organized by the Cape May County Bar Association in conjunction with the Cape May County Superior Court with funds provided by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation for the purpose of providing free legal education to the public.
