COURT HOUSE — Cape May County government employees, members of AFSCME Local 3596, voted Mon., April 11 to modify their contract with regard to salary increases and extend the contract to 2013.
According to Richard Colosi, AFSCME Local 3596 executive board member, the vote total was 390 ballots cast. Of those, 291 voted to accept the modified contract, 96 voted to reject, and three ballots were voided.
“We feel that the rank and file voted in a compassionate way to sustain the jobs of their fellow employees instead of facing significant layoffs,” said Colosi.
The county proposed to extend the local’s contract, which expires June 30, 2012, to June 30, 2013, and divide the increase over a two-year period. That would mean 2.55 percent for the first year to 2012, and 2.45 percent for the extension year to June 30, 2013
Colosi said the next step in the process would be to report the vote results to county management and to Council 71.
“We are confident that Cape May County officials will keep their end of the bargain and suspend the layoff process from going forward,” Colosi told the Herald.
The county hoped to save over $700,000 with the union agreement to split the increases and extend the contract one year.

The AFSCME local was the final bargaining unit of county employees to make a decision on its contract.
