COURT HOUSE – May 8: Today, Cape May County reported 24 new cases of COVID-19 infection, bringing the three day total of new cases to 64, the highest three day total since the county reported its first case March 18.
The county also reported one new fatality, an 80-year-old male, from a Lower Township long-term care facility.
Total cases now total 443, with 215 active, 196 off quarantine, and 32 deaths.
Nineteen of the 24 new cases were concentrated in the population centers of Lower and Middle townships. Of the 12 new cases in Lower Township, all but two were associated with long-term care facilities. In Middle Township, all seven new cases reported were community-based.
On May 5, at the start of this week, the active cases in Lower Township long-term care facilities was reduced to 29. It is now at 55 active cases, almost half of all the long-term care active cases in the county.
Along with the 12 new cases in Lower Township and the seven in Middle Township, three new cases were reported in Woodbine, with all three located at the Woodbine Developmental Center. Upper Township and Wildwood Crest each saw one new case today.
State numbers continued to improve, with 1,985 new cases and 162 new fatalities. Today’s fatalities included a 4-year-old girl. This marked the first COVID-19-related death in the state involving someone under 18 years old.
New Jersey COVID-19 hospitalizations continued to decline and stand at 4,764, of which 1,439 require intensive or critical care, and 1,089 individuals are benefiting from ventilators.
