AVALON – The Borough Council of Avalon met Jan. 29. The council’s work session meeting covered a variety of issues and topics, including several resolutions, the swearing in of two police officers, and the recognition and official proclamation of a retiring municipal clerk. Mayor Martin L. Pagliughi swore in Jeffrey Christopher as captain of police and Sean McNair as patrol sergeant, as well as Georgann M. Berardis as Borough Clerk and Teresa E. Downe as deputy borough clerk. In addition, the mayor and council recognized Amy Kleuskens with an official proclamation for her distinguished service and dedication over the years.
The Borough Council discussed several resolutions, including the resort house ordinance “which prohibits resort houses from existing in residential neighborhoods,” and a resolution authorizing an agreement for animal control services.
Also reviewed was a resolution supporting NBC40. Scott Wahl, Avalon’s public information officer, stated that there was a “resolution of support to keep NBC 40 on the air as a television station that serves the area. The council’s actions show a sign of support to the new owners of NBC40. They are an asset to the media mix in South Jersey and have been valuable partners with all news stories and weather coverage for Avalon and other communities. There’s an effort to have all municipal governments keep the station on the air,” Wahl explained. “NBC40 has been a very valuable partner in getting the word out.”
In addition, Wahl explained, “Channel 2 will move to Channel 97 on or about Feb. 27. The local public access channel has turned into a valuable tool for us to get the word out about special events, emergency announcements and things of that nature. It is a shared channel for Avalon, Stone Harbor and Sea Isle City,” Wahl said. “Each community gets two, ten minute segments each hour to run community information, videos, etc. During each segment there is a local weather forecast and tide information. Our visitors love it because it gives them a snap shot of what happens during their vacations; our locals love it because of the community information, storm alerts, etc. It’s not terribly uncommon for a station like ours to be moved to a different channel number. Currently I have a ‘crawl’ along the bottom of the screen that alerts people to the change in the channel position,” Wahl explained.
Scott Wahl has served as the public information officer for Avalon since March 2008. Previously, he had worked at radio stations as a news/sports director and anchored morning newscasts and storm events. Wahl’s responsibilities include, “the maintenance of the borough’s website, AM radio station during emergencies, the channel 2 move to channel 97, press releases, assisting with coordination of special events, and being on the mayor’s emergency management team to help with storm information and preparedness, including management of Avalon’s emergency management website www.avalonemergency.org, which received literally millions of hits and impressions during Hurricane Sandy.”
Wahl also gave an update regarding a reconductoring project along First Avenue. “Atlantic City Electric is finishing up a reconductoring project in the Borough that began last year that will greatly improve the resiliency and reliability of service at no charge to the Borough. You can visit our website, www.avalonboro.net for updates on that project along with other Borough initiatives,” Wahl concluded.
