OCEAN CITY – City Council introduced a $5.7-million bond ordinance at its Feb. 8 meeting.
If approved on second reading, the bond would fund $1.5 million in vehicle purchases, more than $1 million worth of building improvements, and close to $1.4 million in other work, including repairs to the pool at the community center. The ordinance is set for a public hearing and final vote Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 861 Asbury Ave.
At the same meeting, council approved a resolution accepting a five-year capital plan, which calls for more than $100 million in projects, including $38.7 million in spending in 2018. Some of that work was included in the bond ordinance, the first for this year.
Council members Feb. 8 praised the detail of the capital plan. City Finance Director Frank Donato said the current administration had put big money into roads and drainage, dredging of city lagoons and a multi-year, multimillion-dollar renovation to the boardwalk, the final phase of which is finishing up this winter.
He said previous administrations had spent about $5 million annually on projects, which did not need the same level of planning, but he indicated that low level of spending was part of the reason the more extensive spending was needed, to catch up on neglected infrastructure work.
“We are biting off an unprecedented number of capital projects. Last year, this year, there are some big-ticket items that are finally coming to fruition,” Donato said. “Very costly items that were fit into the plan for a reason.”
