Council Member Questions Split Votes

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – The 3-2 vote is becoming more common on Cape May City Council. In April, a change in membership on the Lafayette Street Park Advisory Committee produced a 3-2 vote. On May 15, council resolutions concerning the Parking Advisory Committee and the potential relocation of a library branch at the Franklin Street School also ended up with 3-2 votes.
In each case, Bea Pessagno and Roger Furlin are voting differently than the majority, consisting of Shaine Meier, Patricia Hendricks, and Mayor Clarence Lear.
On May 15, Pessagno claimed that a flawed process left her unable to properly represent her constituents and may represent a violation of the laws that define the city’s form of government. Pessagno, Furlin, and Meier are all up for reelection in November.
