WOODBINE – Woodbine Borough Council met Aug. 20. Prior to that was its usual “workshop” meeting. At the latter Mayor William Pikolycky announced that 2016 Municipal Aid Applications are due for submission Oct. 20.
Council also discussed reimbursement mechanisms for the cost of remediation of the borough’s contaminated sites which will be finalized at a subsequent meeting
Resolutions Passed
Pikolycky moved through a number of administrative resolutions that were passed with no dissent or public comment. These included identifying a Community Development Business Grant fair housing officer; creating a Citizen Participation Plan under the 2016 Small Cities Programs of the Public Facilities Fund; and approval to submit a grant application and execute a grant contract with the state Department of Community Affairs. These three resolutions were all linked to the borough’s project to renovate the Woodbine Head Start building.
Community Events
As the summer months draw to a close, the borough is anticipating a number of community events that will be organized for Woodbine residents and visitors. These include the First Baptist Church’s “Back to School Bash” to be held Aug. 26 at Lincoln Park; the SOAR Golf Campaign taking place Sept. 25 in Rio Grande; and the Greater Woodbine Areas Chamber of Commerce Car Show Oct. 10.
Class of ‘65 Lauds Progress
During the public comment portion, Steve Benson, identifying himself as a former Woodbine resident, said he wanted to comment on “how far Woodbine has come since I lived here. I’m here in town for my 50th high school reunion and I remember seeing a show back then that equated our small place with a potential ghost town.”
“What I’ve returned to though is a vibrant, old-town-style place, I’m really happy to see that, it’s amazing in my mind all that has been accomplished and I look forward to it continuing,” he said.
Coupled with Benson’s remarks Pikolycky said he has memories of the old Woodbine High School. “It was built in 1904 and cost $15,000 and that amount was half of the entire dedicated tax for the entire year of the entire borough,” he said.
