WOODBINE – Borough Council met July 21 and discussed how to “piggyback,” per Mayor William Pikolycky’s phrase, with Dennis Township in negotiations regarding a contract to use the county animal shelter.
125th Anniversary
Pikolycky issued a proclamation marking the quasquicentennial (125th anniversary) of the founding of the borough when land was purchased from Dennis Township in 1891 that was incorporated in 1903 as the municipality of Woodbine.
Project Updates
Council received updates on several projects funded by grants and the county including County Road 550 improvements.
“This project will be done in two phases, and if we combine with the county as they implement their own road improvements with one contractor doing both jobs we’ll be able to save some money, advertise the job in mid-August and start construction at the latest by October,” said Borough Engineer Bruce Graham.
Graham informed council that the borough received compliant bids for the purchase and installation of an emergency generator for the Municipal Building.
“We thought we would be getting FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) money for a multi-generator purchase of $275,000, but that didn’t come through so we’re buying one generator for about $80,000. We may be able to use MUA (Municipal Utilities Authority) funding to top up the $75,000 we’re receiving through the state Hazard Mitigation Office, which is part of the state Office of Emergency Management.
The winning bidder was Janney Electric of Mays Landing and the other two bids we received were each around $130,000, so we’re happy about the price,” Graham said.
A proposed project in the pre-application phase is a joint $4-million proposal Woodbine submitted with the MUA to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program.
If successful, that project will provide for connecting various facilities in Woodbine including the airport and business park with the county’s force main.
Public Hearing Aug. 1
Pikolycky announced that the municipality would hold a public hearing Aug. 1 at 4 p.m. in Borough Hall to explain federal and state guidelines and consider proposals for an application under the Small Cities Community Development Block Grant program.
“Woodbine is considering submitting a public facilities application for $400,000 for renovations to our Head Start Building. I hope residents will come out to support this application,” the mayor said.
