Contract Awarded for Hazard Mitigation Program Drainage Project

By Press Release

WOODBINE – The Borough of Woodbine awarded the contract for its FEMA-funded Hazard Mitigation Program drainage project to South State, Inc. at its June 19 Council meeting.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had provided the Borough of Woodbine with $1,070,207 through its Hazard Mitigation Program to protect crucial roadways in the Borough from flood damage. The required match was provided through a Small Cities Public Facilities grant award from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs in the amount $400,000.
New Jersey Department of Transportation awarded the Borough of Woodbine additional discretionary aid funding in the amount of $300,000 to supplement funds previously received from Federal Emergency Management Administration and from the New Jersey Department of Community Affair’s Small Cities program for drainage related reconstruction on various Borough roads.
Funding is for design and construction to mitigate the drainage problems that became critical during extreme storms in the past several years.
In addition to improving drainage on various Borough streets, the project will also provide an ancillary benefit by providing a positive drainage system at the intersections of these roads with County Route 550 and County Route 557.
This will result in a much needed improvement for the Borough that will include transportation related components including roadway paving; drainage improvements that will extend pavement life; and the reduction of safety issues attributed to flooding of the roads due to inadequate or non-existent drainage infrastructure.
“A preconstruction meeting was held June 30 at which time the contractor indicated work would begin within the next 14 days. This will be an approximately 100-day project ,” added Mayor Pikolycky. “There may be some inconvenience during the work phase, but this will lead to a reduction in historic flooding areas. The Borough engineer will be on-site for any concerns or questions.”
