CAPE MAY — Congressman William J. Hughes was honored by the mayor, city council and attendees on Dec. 20 at Cape May’s council meeting.
Congressman Hughes served in the House of Representatives from 1975 to 1995. In that time, the congressman served the City of Cape May extensively on a number of projects including the acquisition of federal support and funding to alleviate flooding issues following the storm of 1962; the separation of sanitary and storm sewers; the certification of the city as a National Historic Landmark; and the restoration of the city’s beaches.
Mayor Edward J. Mahaney, Jr. presented Hughes with a plaque featuring a copy of the original 1995 resolution commemorating the congressman’s accomplishments in beach replenishment, as well as two framed images: one of the beach in 1967, prior to beach replenishment; the other of the beach in 2004, demonstrating 14 years of replenishment.
A second copy of the plaque was created to be placed at Cape May’s Convention Hall. The original resolution currently hangs in the library at the William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy at Stockton University.
“We find it’s important to remember those who came before us, because they are the ones who paved the way in order for the City of Cape May to move forward and have a bright future,” Mahaney said. “And Congressman Hughes has done this for the City, and was followed by Congressman LoBiondo, who has walked very well in his footsteps.”
