COURT HOUSE – Freeholder Gerald M. Thornton and the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders recognized the Communications Office at the Freeholders’ Meeting on Sept. 10, 2013 for bringing national recognition to the County of Cape May.
The Cape May County Communications Office is the recipient of four 2013 Awards of Excellence. The awards are presented annually by the National Association of County Information Officers for excellence in communications. Cape May County won a 2013 Superior Award in the writing-news releases category for the release “Experience Spring at the Cape May County Park and Zoo, a 2013 Superior Award for the 2012 Cape May County Directory in the Brochures, Multiple Page Booklets Category, a 2013 Meritorious Award for the 2012 Cape May County Calendar in the External Publications category and a 2013 Meritorious Award for the 2012 electronic quarterly newsletter in the computer media category.
The judges reviewed nearly 300 entries in nine categories from large and small counties and county associations for the 2013 Awards of Excellence. County communications projects entered in this years’ competition demonstrated the breadth of county government services as well as counties’ commitment to inform and engage their citizens.
Director Thornton said, “This is the fourth year that the County Communications Office has submitted entries and they have won each time. To-date, the Office has won twenty (20) national awards for the County of Cape May.”
Lenora Boninfante, Communications Director added, “We have spent the last twelve years creating a department that communicates for all entities of county government – to the residents of Cape May County we are all one County Government. Technology and the times have greatly changed how we do our job; however, our mission to keep the public informed and to be the source of information for the residents of Cape May County remains the same.”
Besides speaking for County Government during emergencies, the Communications Office is responsible for county conferences, special events, a monthly television program, media interviews and promotions. Also, the office is responsible for all county government press releases, produces county brochures and informational publications as well as the official Cape May County Directory, an annual events schedule and a county calendar.
Additionally, the Communications Office oversees the county’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages as well as the county’s You Tube Channel.
As president, for the past seven years, of the New Jersey Public Information Officials, Boninfante has learned first hand that Cape May County and the Communications Office provides top quality services to the residents of the county with less staff and expense than larger counties in the state. The Communications Office consists of Boninfante, Rosemary Gannone and Mark Huff.
