CORRECTION: An Aug. 26 story on Wildwood Crest Borough Commission gave the impression that a closed session dealt with medians, it did not. The session dealt with legal issues unrelated to medians.
WILDWOOD CREST – Plans to construct medians on Pacific Avenue between Rambler Road to Cresse Avenue brought some questions and comments to Wildwood Crest commissioners’ meeting Aug. 19.
One resident asked if they intend to plant any decorative shrubs in the median area, or just cover it with grass. Commissioner Don Cabrera responded that “It makes a lot of sense to add some color to the median, if and when it happens.”
He noted that the board is still considering whether or not to go forward with the plan. Another resident, who works at the school, was concerned that the median might create an unsafe situation for children because some drivers make illegal U-turns at that location.
Others noted that the installation of the median will reduce lanes down from four to two, and were concerned that bikers would be forced off the road because of this change. Cabrera again repeated that they were still studying the plan, and will “weigh it all out” before deciding what to do.
Crosswalks
In a related question, a resident asked about the problem of pedestrian crosswalks. He noted that there are many out-of-state drivers who do not know that they must stop for pedestrians in all intersections and that there are not enough well marked crosswalks.
Mayor Carl Groon responded the borough is considering purchasing more standards that mark crosswalks and that over the off season they will do a study to decide where these standards should be placed, and therefore how many to purchase.
Groon also remarked that the placement of medians such as the ones proposed on Pacific Avenue will also make pedestrian crossings safer for everyone. He stated that additional closed session discussions would take place on these issues and that the plan will be discussed again at the next public meeting.
