Collins, DePrinzio Share County Outstanding Senior Citizen Awards

By Al Campbell

AVALON — Elizabeth Collins and Vincent DePrinzio shared the honor of being named Seniors of the Year in Cape May County for 2012 during the annual Senior Jamboree Thur., May 3 hosted at Avalon Community Center by the county Department of Aging and Disability Services.
Over 400 attended this year’s event, the theme of which was “Aloha.” Some in attendance wore Hawaiian attire. Tables were decorated with inflatable palm trees.
There was live entertainment, dancing, and a free lunch will be served by staff of the Department of Aging and Cape May County high school students.
Donna Groome was introduced by Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton as the new executive director of the Department of Aging and Disability Services. The post was formerly held by Elizabeth Bozzelli, who recently assumed the title of deputy clerk of the board.
Members of the Dramis Detachment Marine Corps League Color Guard were instrumental in the opening ceremonies.
Freeholder Kristine Gabor, liaison to the department, was absent, with family on vacation in Florida, said Thornton. He presented the outstanding senior awards to DePrinzio and Duke Collins, whose mother, Elizabeth Collins was unable to attend. He said she was in Florida attending a graduation of a granddaughter.
DePrinzio accepted the plaque from Thornton, who noted his accomplishments on behalf of all county veterans. He also cited DePrinzio’s efforts that helped to make the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Wildwood a reality.
No outstanding organization award was given this year.
The free event is open to all Cape May County senior residents, age 60 or over. The doors will open promptly at 10 a.m. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, feel free to come dressed in your favorite Hawaiian Island wear and join the fun.
