SWAINTON –– The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) announced a savings of $14,371 for the purchase of a 4,000-gallon water tank kit at its meeting Oct. 1 after a re-bid last month.
The water tank will be placed on an existing tractor chassis for the purpose of fire and dust control at the Sanitary Landfill in Woodbine.
The original estimate from Diversified Fabrications, Inc., of Griffin, Ga., the sole bidder, exceeded the project’s cost estimate at $33,500 and was rejected.
The final contract awarded costs $31,371 and its funding will be taken from the 2008 Solid Waste Capitol Equipment Replacement Fund.
The MUA rejected three bids for a 3,000-gallon gasoline storage tank for the Seven Mile Beach/Middle Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility needed for employees and administration to fill up their cars’ gas tanks.
The current 500-gallon tank needs to be refilled every week during the summer months and state law requires surrounding equipment be shut down while the tank is refilled as a safety measure in case there is an accidental spill.
The fill-up process for the 500-gallon tank takes about two and a half hours, Executive Director Charles Norkis said, and it would take the same amount of time with a larger tank while reducing the frequency of fill-ups.
Bids received were for $34,742, $37,500 and $39,534, which all exceed the engineers $25,000 estimate by about $10,000.
Officials said the bid process will start over in attempt to negotiate a less expensive contract, which may entail reducing the tank size to a 2,000-gallon tank.
