COURT HOUSE — Middle Township officials made it official Monday evening.
Mayor F. Nathan Doughty swore in Township Clerk Kimberly Tomkinson and Business Administrator Mark Mallett following the retirement of long-serving Clerk/Administrator James Alexis on Jan. 31.
“Congratulations on this wonderful advancement in the Township of Middle,” Doughty told Tomkinson following her oath of office. “She has the backing of everyone here.”
Tomkinson told the Herald it was off-putting to see Alexis’ office empty since he had occupied it for so long. She said she has been performing the duties of the clerk for some time, but feels a new sense of responsibility now that Alexis has gone.
Deputy Mayor Susan DeLanzo seemed sure that Tomkinson would rise to the challenge of her new office.
“We are very proud of Kim,” DeLanzo said. “She’s a great asset to the township.”
Following Mallett’s oath of office, Committeeman Stephen Barry said the township took the appointment of a new administrator very seriously. Over several months, more that 60 people applied for the position and 25 were interviewed by committee.
“We knew that hiring Mark was one of the most important decisions we would be making while on township committee,” he said. “But in the end, it was easy. He was the best candidate.”
DeLanzo said she has been impressed by Mallett’s ability to find solutions to problems that he’s encountered.
“He’s a great communicator,” she added.
Since no cake or ice cream was served, there was a mass exodus following the swearing in ceremonies when the attendance in the committee meeting room dropped from over 50 to under 20 in an instant.
