City Seeks to Dedicate Marsh Road

Ocean City Logo

By Bill Barlow

OCEAN CITY – City Council unanimously introduced an ordinance Feb. 8 dedicating a gravel road leading from Roosevelt Boulevard to a dredged material disposal site known as Site 83 and as “Haul Road.”
The road allows heavy equipment access to the site to deposit material dredged from the city’s back bay lagoons. The road was built through the protected wetlands with the understanding that it would be temporary; the city has since asked that the road become permanent.
City officials said naming the road had nothing to do with that, but rather would save money on future permit applications for dredging projects. According to City Administrator James Mallon, the application fees are based on the size of the parcel, so limiting the area in an application to a specific road would save thousands of dollars.
Mallon said there is no chance that any building could take place near the road in the wetlands.
Councilman Tony Wilson asked why it was to be named “Haul Road?”
“Because that’s what it is,” said Mayor Jay Gillian, joking that it could instead be named Wilson Way.
A public hearing and final vote is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 22, at City Hall, 861 Asbury Ave. Wilson asked if the name could be changed at that time.
“It’s not happening,” said Gillian.
