NORTH WILDWOOD ─ City Council and Mayor Patrick Rosenello congratulated Administrative Assistant Ron Simone for his efforts in the National Flood Insurance Program insurance rating April 25.
Simone, along with other city officials, worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and obtained a reduction for the city from a Class 7 rating to a Class 6.
According to Rosenello, different classes equate levels of savings, thus allowing the city a 20 percent reduction in flood insurance costs. “This is significant,” Rosenello said. He added that the cumulative savings result in “huge, huge numbers.”
Simone also added that the best rating in the state “is a five.” Simone urged residents to contact FEMA for further information.
Century as a City
During council comment, City Clerk and Historian Scott Jett said that “100 years ago, last week,” the Borough of Anglesea became the City of North Wildwood.
According to Jett, only seven voted against the official change in Anglesea’s form of government and structure. Jett explained his connection with the past was more than professional. As city clerk, his great-great grandfather was on the board and witnessed the change.
According to Jett, the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse organization will honor the city’s faith-based heritage May 21 with a ceremony at 1 p.m. at the historic lighthouse.
Jett acknowledged Anglesea and its first religious services were held in the lighthouse parlor under the leadership of Freeling Hewitt, the lighthouse keeper, in the late 1800s.
Jett pointed out the changes since 1917, including school board positions selected by city council and husbands and wives serving as tax and deputy tax collectors at the same time.
Beach Showers
Rosenello expressed approval of upcoming beach shower installations from 16th to 25th avenues. According to the mayor, he has received “positive feedback” from residents and guests who used the already installed beach showers. Rosenello believes the showers would be installed by Memorial Day Weekend.
