CAPE MAY – City Council honored Harry Hirsch for his 50 years in business and real estate.
At a May 4 meeting, City Clerk Diane Weldon read a proclamation that noted Hirsch’s projects have beautified the city. The proclamation noted Hirsh overcame tragedy, adversity and bigotry surviving concentration camps in Nazi occupied Poland.
Weldon said Hirsch opened the Montreal Inn in 1966, which has become one of the most recognized businesses in Cape May. She noted a restaurant he built with his own hands at the Montreal Inn now bears his name: “Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille.”
Hirsch’s family was present including his sons Larry and Joseph who have followed in his footsteps.
Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr. said he was a college student working at the Macomber in 1966 when he first met Harry Hirsch. He said Hirsch was one of the rare hotel owners that actually did his own construction work.
“You were a tremendous hit from day one,” said the mayor. “You never forgot where you came from, who worked with you, you always had that same smile on your face.”
“You were always around town helping everybody out, no matter what they needed,” continued Mahaney.
Hirsch said it always made him happy to come home to Cape May.
He received a rousing round of applause from the audience.
