City Affirms Loyalty Day Celebration

By Vince Conti

NORTH WILDWOOD – Representatives of VFW Post 5941 informed city council April 28 of this year’s planned celebration of Loyalty Day May 1. The holiday, not as well-known as its siblings, Memorial Day and Veterans Day, is set aside as an occasion when Americans can reaffirm their loyalty to the U.S. and the heritage of freedom enjoyed by all Americans.
The holiday was first observed in 1921 during what historians have called the “red scare,” a period of intense concern over the rise of communism following the Russian Revolution. Congress recognized it April 27, 1955 in the midst of the Cold War between the U.S. and Soviet Union. President Dwight Eisenhower proclaimed the first official observance May 1, 1955.
The selection of May 1 was specifically intended to counterbalance the celebration of International Workers’ Day in the Soviet Union. During the Cold War, May 1 was an occasion for military parades in Red Square with leaders of the Soviet Union prominently on display atop Lenin’s Tomb.
North Wildwood has a tradition of celebrating the holiday. This year, council presented VFW Post 5941 with a proclamation honoring the holiday at the meeting. The presentation was made by Mayor Patrick Rosenello and Council president Sal Zampirri.
Council also approved the celebration of a very different special event the very next day.
On May 2, the city will host Capt. Kidd Pirate Day which will begin at 11 a.m. at 26th and the Boardwalk.
Kidd, the notorious pirate, was known to trawl waters off New Jersey. This annual event for the young and the young at heart gives children ages 12 and under the opportunity to dress in pirate costumes and participate in a pirates’ parade.
Check-in and judging for prizes will take place during the hour before the parade kicks off at 11. At the end of the parade, at 19th and beach, children will have an opportunity to engage in a Treasure Hunt. No registration for the hunt is required.
Rosenello also introduced the new North Wildwood Information and Recreation Guide. The publication provides residents and visitors with one booklet that contains a 2015 calendar of events along with important information about how to contact all municipal offices.
Emergency information is prominently displayed along with a brief history of North Wildwood. The brochure is also available in electronic form on the city’s website at http://northwildwood.com/north-wildwood-information-guide-2015.
