Church Marks Greek Freedom

By Rachel Rogish

NORTH WILDWOOD ─ “The mountains look on Marathon, And Marathon looks on the sea And musing there an hour alone, I dream’d that Greece might still be free.” English poet Lord Byron penned those lines in the 1800s as Greece struggled for independence from the Ottoman Empire. Led by Rev. Nicholas Rafael II, members of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church gathered March 20 in North Wildwood City Council chambers to celebrate Greek independence won in 1821. Celebrated March 25, Greek Independence Day shares the Feast Day of the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, Jesus’ mother.
