Christmas Tree Recycling Is Easy in Cape May County

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – Throughout Cape May County, natural decoration-free Christmas trees are being collected for recycling. All sixteen Cape May County municipalities are providing this collection service but schedules vary from town to town. Residents and businesses can also deliver Christmas trees to the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority’s (CMCMUA) Landfill Complex in Woodbine or the Transfer Station in Burleigh until Feb. 2, 2013. Christmas trees are now being accepted without charge by the CMCMUA from County residents, businesses, and municipal collection crews. Vendors located in Cape May County who sold Christmas trees can also deliver any remaining trees to the CMCMUA without charge. The trees will be recycled into fragrant Christmas tree mulch.
All stands and decorations must be removed from Christmas trees prior to being set out for recycling. Flocked evergreen trees are included in the recycling program; however, wreaths, garlands, and other similar Christmas decorations are not included. Beginning Feb. 9, 2013, mulch from the chipped Christmas trees will be available to Cape May County residents free of charge at the CMCMUA’s Transfer Station in Burleigh and at the Landfill Complex in Woodbine.
This will be the 24th year for the CMCMUA’s Christmas tree recycling program. Last year, 31.88 tons of Christmas trees became mulch. Since the program began in 1989, a total of 1,950 tons, or an estimated 111,415 trees, have been recycled.
