CAPE MAY – The Cape May Police Department became a certifying agency in the police officer apprenticeship program offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. While traditional images of a carpenter’s apprentice carrying tools and learning by observing an experienced worker do not fit with reality in a police department, the program is still one in which federal benefits are available to a veteran transferring his/her skills to a new occupation.
The program allows veterans selected into the department through the same Civil Service procedures as any other officer and paid the same entry salary, to receive benefits including monetary support from the GI Bill while going through training at the police academy and initial on-the-job work as an officer in the city.
Chief Anthony Marino views the program as “an added benefit for those who served our country.”
