Changes to Jitney Ordinance Introduced

By Vince Conti

AVALON – Avalon Borough Council introduced an ordinance change Feb. 27, that provides for a uniform $3 jitney fare per person per trip for the 2019 season. The move, taken at the request of the Jitney Association, eliminates the increased fee for late-hour passengers.
The amendment also allows council to adjust future fares, routes and hours of operation by resolution only, avoiding the cumbersome ordinance amendment process.
The jitney service is struggling with competition from rideshare services like Uber and adjustments may be more frequent than was anticipated when the service was first authorized in 2013.
Business Administrator Scott Wahl told council that the jitney service would continue a seven-day-a-week service from the Fourth of July holiday through Labor Day, but service prior to that period would be available only Thursdays through Sundays.
