CAPE MAY – In an unusual move, a resolution seeking to eliminate term limits for members of two city advisory committee members accomplished that task while simultaneously setting a new limit on the length of time for which the committee itself is authorized to exist.
The resolution before city council called for the elimination of term limits for members appointed to the Beach Safety and Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety advisory committees.
Committee member Roger Furlin moved that the resolution be amended to include a four-year limit on the committees, meaning the committees would have to be reviewed and reauthorized periodically.
Furlin argued that this was consistent with language in resolutions that established other advisory committees.
A four-year term would also mean that a council with potentially different membership would make a decision to continue the committee or not.
The resolution as amended passed, 3-1, with Council member Patricia Hendricks dissenting.
