CAPE MAY – Cape May needs to expand its Beach Patrol facilities due to the increasing percentage of female guards.
According to City Manager Michael Voll at the July 3 City Council meeting, 46% of the city’s lifeguards are women.
“We need more locker room space for the female guards,” Voll said.
Voll emphasized that there is no plan or design yet, and there will not be one in the near term. As the city comes to the end of the construction of a new fire station, a police station is the next construction activity on the horizon.
What the city did at the July 3 meeting was authorize funds for the start of the permitting phase for the eventual enlargement of the Beach Patrol facility, given a Coastal Area Facility Review Act (CAFRA) permit will be needed and the permitting process can be a long one.
