CAPE MAY – The City of Cape May is beginning a move to fully electric and hybrid electric vehicles.
During his state of the city address at the Cape May City Council reorganization meeting Jan. 3, Mayor Zack Mullock pointed to two electric vehicles purchased by the city for its police department.
“They will be here and in service soon,” Mullock said.
The two vehicles are a Ford Mustang and F-150.
City Manager Michael Voll has reported on progress in establishing charging stations in the city, including one that will be in the City Hall parking lot.
The use of electric vehicles by police is a controversial subject. Arguments in favor of the switch to electric vehicles include lower maintenance requirements, which translates to more in-service time and participating in state-driven green goals for significantly increasing the number of electric vehicles on Garden State roads.
Those who call for caution in any move of police fleets to electric vehicles raise issues like vehicle range and charging times.
Cape May police will soon be able to provide real-world experience on the pros and cons of electric vehicles and policing.
