CAPE MAY POINT — Borough Commissioner Joseph Nietubicz announced his resignation Fri., Aug. 13.
Nietubicz served as Commissioner of Public Affairs and Public Safety for over six years.
Known for his monthly newsletter entitled “The Point Is,” he issued the final edition last Friday with an explanation for his resignation
“Being a Commissioner is full of Federal Regulations, State Regulations, eroding home-rule, special interest groups “for”, special interest groups “against”, “what can you do for ME!” the economy, school taxes, fighting off being consolidated, more services, less taxes, insurance, and liabilities. It’s a world of restriction; of “you can’t do that” and somehow, after that maze and being pelted by public opinion, somehow, I am supposed to figure out what direction to take.”
“I find it more and more difficult to do the job that I was elected for. I’ve had enough,” he continued. “My choices were to become a hermit in my own office, put in my time and draw a paycheck – simply not my style – or leave. I decided to pick up my marbles and go home. I came down here to retire. I want to get back in touch with those things that brought me here; spend the rest of my life with my wife enjoying the Point.”
Nietubicz told the Herald he hasn’t had time to go to the beach in the past two years.
In a statement, Mayor Carl Schupp said Nietubicz contributed greatly to the borough in terms of safety, beach improvements, emergency management and communications.
“As Safety Coordinator of the Borough, Cape May Point is the only shore town not to have a beach patrol accident in the last three years,” said the mayor.
Schupp credited Nietubicz with developing and maintaining the borough’s website and legislative manual.
“The borough is loosing a true contributor to the welfare of the community,” he said.
Nietubicz named three of his accomplishments he was most proud of:
• Emergency Management: “This past winter I got to watch it all work. Do you know that feeling? Watch a plan actually work.”
•Beach Taxi Service: pick-up and delivery for anyone who has trouble navigating soft beach sand.
• Beach Boys and the decks: I have watched tons of people enjoy them – from watching fireworks to have parties to just chilling.
The Beach Boys are a volunteer construction crew concentrating on decks, walks and beach entrance.
“So that’s it boys and girls – color me resigned,” said Nietubicz in the final edition of “The Point Is.”
