CAPE MAY – Cape May City Council adopted its $29.4-million 2018 budget by a vote of 4-1 April 3. The budget includes a one-cent increase in the local purpose tax, from $0.34 to $0.35 per $100 of assessed value.
When the city manager made his budget recommendation in February, the proposed increase in the city tax rate was a half of a cent. Soon after that, the city entered into an $800,000 settlement with police Capt. Robert Sheehan, $440,000 of which must be paid by the city’s taxpayers.
That raised the tax increase to a full cent.
Saying that City Manager Neil Young had misinformed him about the settlement’s impact on the tax rate, Councilmember Roger Furlin voted no.
Council member Bea Pessagno also characterized the information from Young as misleading. She voted yes.
