CAPE MAY – The Cape May Advisory Committee on Parking presented a new recommendation Oct. 15 that would reconfigure parking on Jackson Street.
The narrow street, home to the Virginia Hotel and Mad Batter Restaurant, is a popular destination for tourists. It can also be a parking nightmare, as delivery trucks continuously maneuver for loading zones alongside high-demand, metered parking spots.
The solution offered was to reduce metered parking spots on the street by eight, and transfer all parking, loading zones, and valet parking locations to the west side of the street, leaving the east side for traffic. Cape May City Council did not decide on the proposal.
At the same meeting, council introduced an ordinance that would prohibit parking on both sides of Pearl Street. Currently, parking is allowed on the east side of the street.
Mayor Clarence Lear said the move was a response to public safety concerns. Lear said that emergency vehicles can’t safely navigate the narrow street when cars are parked along one side.
