Cape May Moves to Ban Single-use Plastics

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – Cape May has joined the expanding number of communities who are seeking to rid themselves of single-use plastic bags and products, as an environmental and economic priority.
Cape May City Council Oct. 15 introduced its single-use plastics ordinance, which will come up for a public hearing and potential adoption at council’s Nov. 18 meeting.
The ordinance restricts the use of plastic bags, non-recyclable food packaging materials and utensils, and other plastic foam products. The ordinance provides for a six-month window, within which the products can continue to be used as businesses reduce their inventories. A hardship exemption process is also included.
