CAPE MAY — City Council and Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr. honored City Recreation and Civic Affairs Director Terry Brown on his retirement after 35 years of service to the city.
At a Tue. March 6 meeting, Brown was presented with a plaque which mentioned his “calm, thoughtful and insightful ways.”
Mahaney said Brown was the “leader who created the recreation department,” and later the civic affairs office. He said Brown showed unselfish devotion to duty and worked “unusual hours and crazy schedules.”
The mayor said with his staff, Brown produced a great array of recreation, social and civic events for Cape May “that put us on the map for tourists as a destination…” Mahaney said many of Brown’s recreation programs are countywide.
He said over 300 youngsters participate in Cape May’s roller skating program which will resume in the fall in Convention Hall.
“Without your leadership over the last 35 years, we wouldn’t have a self-funded recreation program that services the needs of residents of every age, embraces a wider community in the county and services the needs of our incoming tourists,” said Mahaney.
Brown’s work has made it easier for the success of the new Convention Hall, he said. Mahaney said Brown accomplished his goals with little resources and without any gain for himself.
Mahaney said a dinner was held at West Cape May Fire Hall two weeks ago in Brown’s honors attended by more than 100 friends and colleagues. Brown has also served as president of the Lower Township School District Board of Education.
Brown thanked the city, mayor and council, department heads, coworkers and volunteers.
“I’ve always considered it a privilege to work for the City of Cape May,” he said.
He said he used to pinch himself and question how he got a job with Cape May.
“It was just a blessing,” said Brown. “I only have two regrets that its time for me to retire and that I didn’t come to City Hall sooner.”
