CAPE MAY – Cape May City Manager Jerry Inderwies ordered city beaches and the Promenade closed March 31, an early response to the COVID-19 spread in the county. On May 1, the city announced that a phased reopening of both the beaches and the Promenade May 2.
Judith Davies-Dunhour said that Stone Harbor had urged a coordinated opening of the beaches across the county, but there was not sufficient support for that approach to set a common date. She said that Stone Harbor would begin its restricted opening of its beaches May 8. Details of the Stone Harbor opening will be available at the Borough Council meeting May 5.
The Cape May City reopening comes with restrictions on the use of the beaches. “Walking – Jogging – Running – Fishing – Surfing” will all be allowed, but no one may sit on the beach in a chair or on a blanket. Picnicking and “congregating in groups” remain prohibited. Even allowed activities will require that participants maintain six feet or more distance from each other and that masks be used “when applicable while passing near others.”
Similar restrictions will remain in place for use of the Promenade for walking and jogging. Social distancing must be maintained, masks are encouraged, and benches may not be used. Bike riding, skateboarding, and roller-skating are prohibited. All restrooms will remain closed.
