CREST HAVEN – Freeholders took the first step March 8 in trying to depart the Atlantic Cape Workforce Investment Board (WIB) and join forces with Cumberland and Salem counties.
Along with Cumberland County, as lead agency, consultant Dante Rieti will “perform the necessary review and to make appropriate recommendations…” according to the resolution passed at the meeting.
The county will pay “its share of the cost of $9,375,” with Cumberland.
The county’s displeasure over services provided by the Atlantic-Cape WIB surfaced Sept. 22, 2015 when Freeholder Kristine Gabor, who volunteered in June 2015 to become the board’s WIB liaison, spoke of “issues we are currently having with the Workforce Investment Board.”
The county is presently a member of the Atlantic-Cape WIB, “a regional unit organized under the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act” and designated as a local service delivery area by the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
Cumberland County is a member of the Cumberland-Salem WIB, a similar organization.
The resolution noted that county officials “approached elected representatives of Cumberland and Salem counties to explore the possibility of Cape May joining the Cumberland-Salem WIB.”
Such an action is governed by federal and state laws and “can present highly technical review of these controlling authorities in order to ensure the efficient administration and delivery of workforce development services as available through grants under WIOA, the Work First New Jersey program” and other similar state and federal funding sources.
Cape May and Cumberland “determined that it would be advantageous to retain a consultant knowledgeable in administration and delivery of workforce development services” to study laws and make recommendation as to the potential expansion of the Cumberland-Salem area to include Cape May.
Rieti had submitted a proposal for his services.
The board will await Rieti’s recommendations before any further action is taken.
