Cape Council Tables Try to Sell Lot

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – The City of Cape May has been reviewing its portfolio of municipally-owned vacant lots, most irregularly shaped and unsuitable for independent development. One such lot at 1015 Maryland Ave. was on the agenda of city council’s Sept. 4 meeting with the intent that council would approve a private sale to one of three owners of adjacent properties.
Two of those neighbors spoke against the resolution claiming that the lot was part of an “active drainage collection area.” They argued that any development on that land would exacerbate the flood problems in the area.
In the course of the discussion, mention of city improvements to the drainage system over the last several years led to tabling the resolution. City Solicitor Frank Corrado pointed out that a private sale is only allowed when no substantial improvement had been made to the lot.
Corrado will look into the definition of improvements with respect to the drainage system.
