CAPE MAY – Dennis Crowley, speaking for the Cape May Taxpayers’ Association, made a detailed presentation Dec. 3, 2019, to City Council concerning the city’s budgeting and revenue raising practices.
The thrust of his 60 slides was to argue that inequities exist in the present practices leading to too great a burden being placed on the property taxpayer.
Crowley called for the creation of a broadly representative advisory committee to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the city’s budgeting practices.
Crowley’s presentation was welcomed by the council, but council has not had discussion, pro or con, about appointing such an investigative group.
To jump-start such an effort, Council Member Zack Mullock proposed a resolution authorizing the creation of the committee at the Feb. 18 council meeting.
Deputy Mayor Patricia Hendricks moved to table the resolution, arguing that it should be placed on the agenda of a council work session for discussion before being considered for adoption.
The motion to table passed 3 to 2 with Mullock and Council Member Stacy Sheehan voting against it.
The next council work session is scheduled for March 3, at 4 p.m.
