CAPE MAY – On Feb. 6, City Manager Neil Young presented a proposed budget to Cape May City Council that included an increase in the local purpose tax levy from $0.340 per $100 of assessed value to $0.3448.
Following the presentation of that budget, the city settled a three-year-old lawsuit with Capt. Robert Sheehan. The city’s portion of that $800,000 settlement is $460,000, which had not been allocated in the proposed 2018 budget.
To accommodate the settlement costs, the city budget, as introduced March 6, increased the tax level by a full cent to $0.350, while also using an additional $170,000 of surplus.
The public hearing on the budget will be April 3.
