Brigadier General Jeffrey Pierson Sworn in as Cape May County Freeholder

COURT HOUSE — After nearly 40 days without a full five member Board, Upper Township resident Jeffrey L. Pierson was sworn into office on Oct. 25, 2016 to replace Kristine Gabor on the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The Cape May County GOP Convention convened on Oct. 19 and Pierson was elected Freeholder from a slate of four vying for the position.
Pierson, a life-long resident of Cape May County, retired from the United States Army as Brigadier General in 2003, with over 42 years of military service. In his civilian career, before returning to the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs, he served as the Cape May County Undersheriff – Correctional Division from 1999 through 2005, and was a Certified Jail Manager by the American Jail Association.
Pierson returned to the Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs in 2005, he served as Manager of the Homeland Security Exercise Support Team and as the Domestic Preparedness Officer. In 2006 he moved to be the Director National Guard Joint Training Center, Sea Girt, NJ. On 2013 he was reassigned as the Commandant of the New Jersey Youth Challenge Program at Ft Dix, NJ.
Pierson was elected to the Upper Township Committee in Jan. 2015, he resigned from that office to take a seat on the Freeholder Board. He received an honorary doctorate of letters from Fairleigh Dickinson University earlier this year. Pierson joins Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton; Vice Director Leonard C. Desiderio, E. Marie Hayes and Will Morey on the Board and will serve Gabor’s unexpired term until Nov. 2017.
After taking the oath, administered by County Clerk Rita Fulginiti, Pierson went straight to work, participating in the regular work meeting of the Freeholder Board. Pierson will oversee County Departments under Health and Human Services.
In welcoming Pierson to the Board, Freeholder Thornton said, “It is a privilege to have Jeff Pierson serve as a member of the Board. He has served the County and his Country well over the years and has proven himself to be a leader and a dedicated and hardworking public servant. His 42 year military record and assentation through the ranks speaks volumes to his character and abilities. It is with great pride that we welcome Brigadier General Jeffrey Pierson to the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders”.
