Brannen Says Tough Decisions Ahead for School Budget

By Press Release

WILDWOOD — On May 11, Commissioner Al Brannen and Interim Administrator Richard Deaney met informally with members of Wildwood High School Board of Education and some members of the public to discuss impending school budget cuts.
On April 20, with 90 in favor of and 212 opposed, the public overwhelmingly rejected the school budget proposed for the Wildwood School District. Under state law, the City of Wildwood Board of Commissioners must now examine the budget line-by-line to determine how it should be handled.
“The tax-payers have voted; they have spoken.” Brannen said. “As everybody knows, we’re doing our best to keep the budget down. We’ve already reduced taxes more than two cents this year, and we’ve had to lay people off in City Hall. If teachers don’t want to give concessions, the school’s going to have to cut somewhere.”
“In a situation like this, everybody faces tough choices,” Brannen added. “That includes teachers, who must consider whether they want to agree to concessions that could save jobs for some of their colleagues.”
“This is a shared burden,” Superintendent Dennis Anderson said. “We’ve tried to be fair across the board to see where we can make [cuts] and still not impact programs of education to the point where we’re not being effective.”
Anderson and business administrator Gregory Rohrman have both foregone salary increases for the next year.
A formal meeting regarding the school budget will be held at City Hall next Tuesday, May 18, at 7 p.m. A decision on the school budget will be made at that time, in order to meet the state’s May 19 deadline.
