Borough Received DEP Recycling Grant Award

By Press Release

WOODBINE – Mayor William Pikolycky is pleased to announce that the Borough of Woodbine has received $4,794.37 from the State of New Jersey for a recycling grant.
New Jersey became the first state to require statewide recycling in 1987 with passage of the Statewide Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act. The state subsequently set a target of recycling 50 percent of the state’s municipal solid waste.
The Recycling Enhancement Act boosts the amount of grant money available to local governments by creating a recycling enhancement fund through a $3-per-ton surcharge on trash taken to solid-waste disposal facilities, such as the one located in Upper/Woodbine. Municipal solid waste materials include paper, corrugated paper, glass, metal containers, and plastic.
Local governments receive 60% of the money the fund generates to help them enhance outreach and compliance efforts. The balance goes for county garbage and household hazardous-waste collection programs, county and state promotional efforts, and recycling research.
This year’s grant awards are being made several months earlier than in the past due to a system that now allows local governments to report solid waste figures electronically coupled with outreach by the DEP.
“We are pleased that Woodbine’s on-going recycling efforts are still bearing fruit.
We will be using these funds to upkeep our equipment and to continue to keep our costs down on our trash disposal and recycling contracts,” concluded Mayor Pikolycky.
