CREST HAVEN – It’s not the same Bob (“The Price Is Right”) Barker, but inmates at Cape May County Correctional Center will be clothed and sleep on items from Bob Barker Co. of Fuquay-Varina, N.C. Freeholders awarded a contract to that firm Feb. 25 to furnish and deliver bedding, inmate clothing and miscellaneous supplies for a two-year term for $18,167.
Curious as it may seem, similar items produced by inmates at Southern State Correctional Facility in Bridgeton and other in-state prisons in the DEPTCOR program were priced higher than those by Barker, according to county Purchasing Agent Kim Allen.
Fords Serviced by Gentilini
County-owned Ford Motor Co. vehicles will be serviced by Gentilini Ford, Inc. of Woodbine under a contract estimated at $30,000. The contract calls for the agency to “perform Ford Motors proprietary diagnostic services and resultant repairs to Cape May County-owned Ford Motors.” Allen explained that, due to the nature of the work, it could not be performed at the county’s vehicle shop.
FEMA Flood Maps
Director Gerald Thornton reported to the board he had received a call from his Atlantic County counterpart Frank Formica who asked Cape May County to join with that county to enlist the services of Richard Stockton Coastal Research Center for Phase II FEMA flood maps for municipalities in both counties. The cost to the county will be $10,000. The resolution passed with support of three freeholders present: Thornton, Vice Director Leonard Desiderio and Kristine Gabor. Absent were E. Marie Hayes and Will Morey.
Thornton said the action would, “Make sure bay and coast areas we have oversight on the new FEMA maps which could have such a drastic impact on federal flood insurance.”
Seek State Bridge Funding
A resolution was passed to submit a grant application to the state Department of Transportation for the 2014 Local Bridges Future Needs Program. Bridges for which funding was sought:
Corson’s Inlet for substructure repairs.
Grassy Sound bascule spans rehabilitation.
Roosevelt Boulevard over Crook Horn Creek deck rehabilitation.
Funds, if approved, would be distributed from the Transportation Trust Fund.
The board took the following actions:
• Granted permission to Somerset Wheelmen to conduct bicycle time trials on Court House-South Dennis Road (CR 657) April 6 from 7 to 10 a.m. and to use a portion of the Zoo’s parking lot and facilities for event participants.
• Approved 26 potential projects, totaling $34,181,575 over 28.02 miles of county road that make up the 2014 Annual Capital Construction Program. A copy was sent to the district DOT manager. Most costly, Woodbine-Ocean View Road pin Woodbine and Dennis Township, totaling 3.91 miles for $3.4 million. Least costly, 34th Street, Ocean City from Bay Avenue to Central Avenue, a total .29 miles for $477,565.
• Modified contract with Tetra Tech, Inc. in amount of $789,200 for professional engineering and license site remediation at Cape May County Airport.
