CREST HAVEN – The Lower Township Beach Drive Restoration Project received approval for a shared services agreement and funding from freeholders. This agreement authorizes the use of Open Space grant money up to, but not to exceed $993,440 to partially fund a project that created a sidewalk on the west side of Beach Drive in the North Cape May-Townbank section of Lower Township. It is designed to protect pedestrians and beach goers from vehicular traffic. This project has experienced some opposition from residents who see the project as too expensive, and that endangers the stability of beach preservation and flood damage concerns.
The township recently authorized additional bond funds to cover the projected $1.97 million cost. The township has already been approved for a $177,000 state Department of Transportation grant to improve existing sidewalks on the east side and to improve the roadway that is being slightly widened as part of the overall plan.
