CREST HAVEN – Freeholders appointed Cheryl Spaulding and Elizabeth Hargett as members of the county Culture and Heritage Commission at the March 27 meeting. Spaulding, of Whitesboro, and Hargett, of North Wildwood, will serve five-year terms that began April 1, 2018.
The board honored Atlantic Cape Community College Professor Ethel “Effie” Russell for receiving the American Association of Community College Faculty Distinction Recognition. Russell has taught at the college for 35 years.
Similarly, the board presented a resolution to Atlantic Cape Associate Professor Svetlana Marzelli for service “above and beyond” the call of duty. She acted as an interpreter Jan. 31 when a jet bound for Havana, Cuba from Moscow, Russia, with 294 passengers and 14 crew members made an emergency landing at Atlantic City International Airport.
Members of the Cape May City Elementary School were honored for the district’s recognition by the state Department of Education as a Lighthouse District. It was one of seven selected in the state for “illuminating the path toward academic growth and student success.”
In other action the board:
* Renewed agreement with Atlantic County for shared services of the juvenile detention center “Harborfields” when needed. This was the fourth one-year agreement to use the facility.
* Appointed Elizabeth Reed to the board of the Cumberland-Salem-Cape May Workforce Development Board for two years starting March 27. She is with the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
* Reappointed Robert P. Rixey, of Court House, and appointed Andrew Bulakowski, of Lower Township, as members to the county Planning Board for three years. Terms expire Feb. 10, 2021.
* Approved a change order for $157,051 for the contract of Arthur J. Ogren Inc. for the renovation of the Lower Township Public Safety Building for the Office of Emergency Management.
* Approved a $23,595 professional services agreement with Mott MacDonald LLC for site remediation for Building 98, the former Lion Limousine building, at Cape May County Airport.
* Indemnified Police Unity Tour for bikers to use county Bridge Commission bridges May 10; and indemnified Ocean Drive Run Club Inc., the Bridge Commission and county for running of the Ocean Drive Marathon April 22. Race will start in Sea Isle City, head to North Wildwood, and return to Sea Isle City.
