CAPE MAY — The Beach Theatre, which will be demolished next month according to its owners, will require a permit from the city before work can begin.
Cape May Construction Official William Callahan told the Herald, he has been in contact with two staff members of Frank Investments, owners of the Beach Theatre, informing them what they need to submit to receive a demolition permit.
The city’s checklist requires:
• A building sub code permit application noting the square footage of the building.
• Application to the city’s Shade Tree Commission for any tree removals on the property.
• A copy of a certified, return-receipt letter sent to adjoining property owners within 500 feet notifying them of the date of demolition.
• A letter from South Jersey Gas, City of Cape May Water/Sewer Department and Atlantic City Electric certifying disconnection of service.
• A letter from a licensed plumber and a permit to cap off water/sewer lines.
• Asbestos removal, applicant may call county Municipal Utilities Authority to information. Asbestos cannot be removed from the building until a demolition permit has been issued.
• A state/municipal licensed contractor must handle demolition.
The city’s Historic Preservation Commission has issued a ruling allowing demolition.
Callahan said no one from Frank Investment has come to his office requesting a demolition permit. He said his office has 20 days to approve or deny the application once it is received.
