SEA ISLE CITY – At its meeting Feb. 27, City Council received copies of a long-awaited initiative designed to enhance the municipality’s efforts for beach safety and etiquette.
Council President Mary Tighe said, “We’ve been working on getting this information together and produce a ‘rack card’ that will be distributed to people who buy beach tags, that will be included in our welcome packets, and be available in special card racks around town.”
The information on the cards gives illustrations of beach warning flags, from green/low hazard through yellow/medium hazard to red/high hazard. It also explains what to expect when there are dangerous surf conditions.
There is also information about why it is prohibited to feed seagulls.
Of timeliness, the information talks about beach etiquette including regarding the use of tents on the beach.
“Tents can be intense. Be mindful of others when erecting tents and cabanas. They may provide shade, but large tents also block views of the ocean and access to the water’s edge,” per the card.
Other etiquette points address beach attire, music, smoking, profanity, trash, and shaking one’s beach blanket of sand.
“We have been hearing complaints from residents about many of these beach etiquette issues, especially regarding the beach tents. So we thought these ‘rack cards,’ rather than passing another ordinance, would be most effective in helping educate people about what is expected on the beach so that all can enjoy our beautiful beaches and have a great time in Sea Isle,” said Tighe.
In responding to citizen remarks during the public comment portion to get more police on the boardwalk as well as the beach, and have the cards distributed by real estate agents, Tighe replied, “This is just the first step of many to ensure everyone can enjoy all that Sea Isle City offers. We printed 10,000 cards, and they’re ready to go as an educational tool.”
