STONE HARBOR – Stone Harbor Office of Emergency Management Director J. T. Lakose told borough council Oct. 16 that the new signage and barricades at the intersections of 96th and 95th streets and Third Avenue helped to prevent flood damage during recent storms.
Third Avenue north of 96th Street is known as a flood-prone area in the business district. Long-term projects to mitigate flooding with drainage and pump systems are underway.
In an attempt to provide some immediate relief to stores along Third Avenue, a system was installed to eliminate traffic when the street is flooded.
This summer as the borough dealt with remnants of three major storms, Lakose said the elimination of wave action from passing cars on Third Avenue prevented damage to local businesses. “The system worked,” he reported to council.
