CREST HAVEN – Bang! Bang! Bang! Drivers and residents in the vicinity of Crest Haven Road and Garden State Parkway may be feeling the earth move. Bang! Bang! Bang!
What is being heard and felt is a pile driver engaged in placing steel “H” piles for what will be the overpass at Crest Haven Road as part of the ongoing project which began Feb. 4, 2013.
“This week they started driving piles for the overpass,” County Engineer Dale Foster told freeholders Jan. 14. Motorists are finally beginning to see the start of construction of the first of three such overpasses that will speed motorists without fear of crashes at traffic-light controlled intersections.
Length of the piles will vary among the three overpasses. At Crest Haven Road, the minimum is 92 feet and maximum is 105 feet. At Stone Harbor Boulevard, 87 feet minimum and 97 feet maximum, and Shell Bay Avenue 87 feet minimum and 97 feet maximum.
“I was amazed,” said Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton. He said while sitting in his truck at the traffic light, he observed the pile driver placing the support about six inches for every impact.
That’s not desirable, Foster said, noting that, if the piling moves into the ground that quickly, it is proof the ground cannot support much weight. He added that the pile driving continues until “refusal.”
That term, Foster said, means the pile has reached dense sand that is similar to concrete. There is another term, “skin friction” that means the pile can be held in place.
Foster said vibration tests had been done that indicated there would be less felt nearby than when the contractor was removing old pavement making way for the new road.
