Backpassing Project Ready

By Vince Conti

AVALON – In 2016, Avalon conducted a backpassing project that took sand from an approved area at 34th Street and moved it to eroded north-end beaches. That early attempt at backpassing provoked protest from residents near the borrow area who claimed the project left them with deep gullies and a compromised beach.
In 2018, the borough conducted another backpassing operation in the same borrow area and most residents of the area were pleased with the result. As an April 2019 project mobilizes to send 50,000 cubic yards of sand to beaches from 11th to 15th streets, one of those residents asked borough officials at a March 27 council meeting to remember what went right in 2018.
The speaker, a 34th Street property owner, cited characteristics of last year’s successful effort at relocating sand: Do shallow scraping as much as possible; stay east of the water line; use heavy equipment to fill in any gullies that the sand removal creates.
Borough officials plan to incorporate measures from last year’s successful effort in the 2019 project.
